At Lowe's, we believe we must extend current efforts to build employee awareness of the benefits of collaborative technologies into actionable steps to embed its use and new work habits into all normal flows of work. "Showing up to share" is becoming an integral part of our overall strategy. This includes updated enterprise methodologies for development, testing, deploying and measuring new initiatives in all parts of the company from Merchandising, Store Operations, IT Support, to Training and Employee Communications functions. Further, we must foster the behaviors needed to realize our strategy by promoting the concepts of "working out loud" as being a bedrock of thinking, acting, leading differently. We know we must face known cultural barriers and employee resistance factors head-on and reward measurable behaviors of sharing and expertise exchange.

There are strong risks related to delaying or not implementing efforts to embed the use of collaborative technologies within normal flows of work. Competitors moving more quickly towards adopting Social Business ways of working (through the use of collaborative technologies and the accomplishments they generate) will soon have a distinct competitive advantage. Because the benefits of Social Business require a fundamental change in the way employees work, simply installing software will not be enough to realize its value. Unlike the .com boom of the 1990s, companies falling behind or waiting to begin Social Business efforts will not be able to buy their way back in.

Installing collaborative technologies and using them as a "water cooler" application to promote awareness of corporate events doesn't make your company a social business in 2011. The novelty of wikis in the workplace is over. It's now the degree to which your company can move its "work in progress" to transparent, enterprise, participatory, searchable platforms which ultimately reflects the degree to which your company is "social" in the way it executes its business and serves its customers.

The employees of today and tomorrow expect faster access to each other, quicker answers and better ways to connect with expertise and the information they need to accomplish goals and satisfy customers. We hope to be at the very forefront of large company adoption of Social Business in order to more quickly gain the business value it promises.

Thanks, Susan. I love the Pirsig quotes. It's only recently that I started getting the sequence right when it comes to the change I want to bring about. (I used to have it backwards!)

"Change myself. Change the work. Change the world."
